A local game shop bought my Dragons. A butt ton of paper taking up shelf space. It was enough to have the maps from my best convention modual turned into battle mats.
I was never able to find the Grimtooth stuff. I prefer conundrums over traps.
Wow, itās so good to see so many fellow old folks here! Started playing D&D in 1976, not only before it was cool but also before it was uncool. My second game was Traveller, but I donāt remember which was third as the floodgates opened up. Maybe Gamma World?
Anyway, my gaming went on hiatus for some years as I āgrew up,ā but now find that Iāve grown up even more and have started playing again. Iāve moved since then, though, and a medical condition keeps me from being mobile enough to play face-to-face, so I play online these days (thank goodness for VTTs).
Currently itās mostly Call of Cthulhu, with a few odd other games thrown in here and there, and Iām currently prepping a Delta Green campaign and hope to go hunting for victims, er, I mean players, soon. I may start work on one for Champions (Hero System) as well, time and energy willing.
Itās hard to find now, or expensive. nobleknightgames.com has some of them in stock for varying prices. I picked up the ultimate collection softcover back when it was affordable.
Greetings all, itās great to be back. I had an account on the old site in 2009. Speaking of āoldā, Iām now over 60, and retired from the IT industry.
Iāve been playing role-playing games since the original āDungeons and Dragonsā White Box reached the UK around 1977. My favourite line of RPG products was āTravellerā, and Iām currently refereeing Mongoose Traveller version 1 (2008), using Discord and Roll20 online tools. Iām using the same technology to play D&D 5, which is still great but this incarnation a bit too similar to a video game for my taste. Over the decades I have played far too many different role-playing games, and other boardgames, to recall, or to list here (sorry).
Much as I like (new versions) of old games, I also enjoy playing/GMing newer games (āSavage Worldsā for example). Similarly, I enjoy both role-playing games, and tabletop wargames. Iām currently playing an old Simulations Publications Inc (SPI) classic using VASSAL software over the web.
Sadly I am not related to Steve Jackson, although I do have his old Microgames. I have yet to find a computer wargame that I enjoy, but Iāve not yet given up hope. I guess the nearest is www.conflictnations.com, but thatās not really a simulation. I also play āDiplomacyā over the web at www.playdiplomacy.com.
I shall regard my music and film preferences as āoff-topicā and maybe save them for my future profile page.
Nope, this is a second draft that I had to do a total rewrite on for a dev editor. With my busy schedule, itās taken me since July to even hit the halfway point on the draft, and I have a little more to go on it, plus edits.
I guess I should do an intro, though thereās not much to it. I was a very minor player on the old site.
I am a weirdo who mostly plays D&D 4e, in person with family and friends, and also in play-by-post games (on various forums and websites). I dabble in other systems but to a much lesser extent.
Although I love being a player, I usually end up as the GM. Luckily I love GMing, too. Luckily, the gaming world and the real world are full of great resources that I can use in our games.
It was sad to see the old site disappear. Iām glad itās being resurrected/reincarnated! Itās great to see its old members posting again along with new people who are joining.
Iāll continue to be a very minor player on this site. I do enjoy reading and learning from everyone who posts.
Started in 1980 with the B/X sets, moving quickly to AD&D and then practically every other rpg at the time. Board/card games also rule so I had to form my own company (Epic Age Media) to start publishing my own line of games. Too many sessions and campaigns to remember but most were pretty darn good!
Boardcard?
Hey, wasnāt the Basic Set the second version?!
Third. White box, AD&D, then Basic D&D.
Hey there fellow (TT)RPGers!
Started playing D&D as a young onā when the Basic Set came out - long before you had to clarify that you were part of the minority TableTop population. I currently prefer AD&D or AD&D 2nd Ed, if I play D&D. I grew frustrated with 3.5, but Pathfinder (aka 3.7) is okay too. Over the years I have enjoyed Cyberpunk, Paranoia, Stargate SG-1, Top Secret, Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu, Dresden Files, StarFinder, and Firefly/Serenity, maybe a few others Iāve forgotten about. Lately, being social with fellow creatives is as much if not more rewarding than the game play itself.
Lately, mostly been playing, well, nothing really. But most recently we were playing Shadowrun and Firefly via Roll20 with Discord for voice.
Located in central WI.
Other interests: outdoorsy stuff (hiking, rock climbing, gardening, ATV, snowmobile, etc), BattleBots (as spectator, so far), pinball (even though Iām not good), home theater (even thought I donāt technically have one yet), and much much more.
Enlighten me. Iām pretty sure White Box refers to āoD&Dā. What is AG&G (unless a typo)?
To my knowledge and way of thinking (Original) Dungeons and Dragons 1974 would be first, then the Basic Set in early 1977 would be second. AD&D later in 1977 would be third and AD&D 2nd Ed. in 1989 forth.
White Box is indeed the Zero Edition. and yes a typo, Iām a terrible typist.
Yes, good memory! I started with the one before this, then got this as a gift of sorts and just kept it as a memento as I didnāt need the rules or dice by that point.
My name is Mudgrubber. Been gaming D&D since the Pink and Blue Boxes in the early 80s. I ran the Caverns of Chaos for some friends where we had everyone hurling their guts at the stench of the caves. That group eventually grew up and moved on, same as I did. I continued to play off and on with AD&D, but became burned out with all the different rules and changes. Got married in 1993 and could not wait for my kids to become old enough to play D&D. Started them off with Heroquest, moved to Advanced Heroquest, then introduced D&D Basic before moving to 3.5E. As they became older (as did I) we became interested in Shadowrun. We also had several friends that came over to play D&D and other friends that were interested in Shadowrun. Again, life intervened (as it always does) and those groups ended. My kids grew up and now have kids of their own. They have introduced the grandkids to Heroquest and D&D, but like all good things, life intervenes.
Have not been able to locate a gaming group in several years, and sometimes my occupation as a claims adjuster gets in the way of gaming.
I have played HQ, AHQ, D&D Basic, AD&D, 3.5E (fave), and tried 4E but did not care for it, Shadowrun editions 1, 2, and 3, but prefer to combine aspects of 2 and 3.
Enjoy playing with minis and landscapes for that 3D visual thanks to age affecting my eyesight. My wife also likes playing wizards only, and would inquire with her on gaming if a group is located.
Hello all.
I started gaming back in 82 with the Redbox set of D&D and played various systems throughout the 80s and 90s. Got married in 99 and moved from my home state of Ohio (Xenia) down to the now wifeās hometown in Alabama. Took a break from gaming due to no one living near me was a gamer, bible belt so what could you expect, and my son was just born.
I did not restart gaming till I started poking around IRC then Webrpg and moved to OpenRPG / Traipse in 2005/2006. When OpenRPG imploded, I moved to Roll20 (2012) and was running games there for about 8 to 10 yrs. Now I have an in person group that I run Basic Fantsy RPG for every week.
Have a good day and may the dice gods favor you.
Pat
LIke many posters Iāve seen here, I also am pretty old school. Started in the early 80s in high school and have been playing on and off ever since. In the late 90ās/early 2000ās I was in a group that we all had our pre-teen children playing with us (they also still play when they can). I managed to find a couple groups locally through the original PPG site over the years. I found a good group of folks through work and have been playing weekly with them for the last several years. I also still do play-by-post here and there, as that was a medium I was able to use when I didnāt have any tabletop going on (Tangled Web, Mythweavers, etc). I mainly only PbP on dndgamer.nl these days (a resurrection of the old dndgamer.com), but thereās really only a small handful of active folks there.
Ah yes,. good old play by post. Iāve had one running with a friend for over 20 years, just the two of us. (I remember when it was play by post offal.)
